Police say that an abducted Taiwanese businessman has been found dead. That’s despite the fact that the man’s family had already paid the kidnappers NT$30 million (US$1 million) in ransom on August 18, the day of the abduction.
The 57-year-old businessman, Shih Chia-chin was abducted by his driver and three other accomplices. Police believe that the driver, Hsieh Yuan-hsin, fled to Thailand on the night of the abduction using a relative’s passport. That was after he tried and failed to transfer a large portion of the ransom money to another bank account.
The police found the victim’s decomposing body in the mountains of southern Taiwan on Sunday. The victim, who made a fortune from online gambling businesses, became a billionaire by investing in real estate and operating hypermarkets in both Taiwan and abroad.
The police in Taiwan are working with authorities in Thailand to bring in the suspects.
