NDC: Cross-strait free trade zone cooperation an option
Taiwan and China should work together

The National Development Council says cooperation between free trade zones across the Taiwan Strait is an option to help boost the economies on both sides. That’s the word from National Development Council (NDC) Deputy Minister Kao Shien-quey on Tuesday.

Kao was speaking at a forum on cross-strait cooperation on free trade pilot zones.

She said Taiwan’s Free Economic Pilot Zones can work with Shanghai’s free trade zone in the areas of finance, e-commerce, speedy custom clearance, and the quarantine of aquarium fish.

Taiwan’s e-commerce industry has trouble gaining an access to China’s market. Kao explains:

"Taiwan’s e-commerce operators are facing a big problem because their websites are blocked in China," said Kao. "Would it be possible that the operators in the pilot zones, approved by our government, will not have their websites blocked by China?" she said.

Chinese officials participating in the forum said its Shanghai free trade zones have already attracted almost 20,000 businesses, including nearly 7,000 foreign businesses. The zones are a way the two sides are dealing with trade liberalization in the global community.
