Taiwan wants support for participation in UNFCCC, ICAO

The 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly will convene in late September. Taiwan wants to gain support for its meaningful participation in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

In this year’s Assembly, the UN Security Council will focus on tensions in the Middle East, and the general debate will also include a climate change conference.

In September 2009, Taiwan formally announced it is seeking meaningful participation in UN agencies such as the UNFCCC and ICAO.

Last September, the ICAO chairman invited Taiwan to participate in the 38th Session of the ICAO Assembly in Canada under the name "Chinese Taipei". That was the first time in six years that Taiwan was invited to participate in an UN agency since its participation in the World Health Assembly as an observer.

In 2011, during the 34th session of the UNFCCC's Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), there was a mention of Taiwan’s participation as “an agency of Chinese Taipei”. Taiwan wants to gain international support to participate in the UNFCCC as an observer.
