APEC Marine Ministerial Meeting to open in Xiamen

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2014 Fourth Marine Ministerial Meeting is scheduled to open on Thursday. A Taiwanese delegation led by Agriculture Minister Chen Bao-ji will be attending the event, which will be held in the Chinese city of Xiamen.

The meeting will center on the subject of building a new Asia-Pacific marine cooperation partnership. Ministers from the 21 member economies will discuss the development potential of marine systems in promoting economic growth, environmental protection, food security and technological innovation. The meeting will provide a platform for exploring practical cooperation in the marine field among Asia-Pacific countries and make great efforts to build a more integrated, more comprehensive, sustainable and mutually beneficial marine cooperation partnership.

Agriculture Minister Chen Bao-ji will be giving a speech about the oceans’ role in global food security. Other members of the delegation will include officials from the foreign ministry, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Fisheries Agency. The ministers will sign an action plan called the Xiamen Declaration after the meeting.
