President of the legislature Wang Jin-pyng wrapped up his visit to Central America Wednesday. He was leading a Taiwanese delegation to Nicaragua to attend a meeting of the Forum of Presidents of the Legislative Bodies of Central America and the Caribbean Basin. Taiwan has permanent observer status in the organization and enjoys regular diplomatic relations with many of its member nations.
Wang held a press conference with Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega. Ortega promised to support Taiwan and strengthen Taiwan-Nicaragua relations. During the press conference, Wang also spoke about President Ma Ying-jeou’s policy of “viable diplomacy” and his East China Sea Peace Initiative. These two policies have helped improve cross-strait relations and won the support of Taiwan’s allies.
On Wednesday evening, Wang arrived in New York. On Thursday, he met with the UN ambassadors of several diplomatic allies. Wang urged the ambassadors to support Taiwan at the upcoming session of the UN general assembly. Wang also urged the ambassadors to help support Taiwan’s bid to participate in the International Civil Aviation Organization and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
