Labor group unhappy with proposal to raise the minimum wage
We want a living wage!

A proposal to raise Taiwan’s minimum wage has failed to satisfy the Taiwan Labour Front, an activist organization.

On Friday the Ministry of Labor’s minimum wage review committee recommended that the minimum monthly wage for full-time work should go up by 3.8% to NT$20,008 (about US$669), while the minimum hourly wage for casual and part-time work should be increased by 4.3% to NT$120 (about US$4).

Taiwan Labour Front Secretary-General Sun Yu-lien said there was “a big difference” from the monthly NT$23,745 that labor groups were expecting.

Labor groups have said that raising the minimum wage is a way to tackle chronic low pay in Taiwan and to help reduce the income gap. They are also calling on the government to raise the minimum wage by a larger margin next year.
