Taiwanese player Chan Jung-jan and her English partner Ross Hutchins made it to the mixed doubles semi-finals at the US Open on Monday.
They were winning 6-3, 1-2 when their opponent retired. They were playing against Polish Marcin Matkowski and Czech Kveta Peschke in the quarterfinal. Peschke struggled and quit the game on a hot and humid evening in New York.
Chan and Hutchins now face top seeds Sania Mirza and Bruno Soares in the upcoming semifinals.
Hutchins said that Chan was playing great. He also said he enjoys playing with her and that the two are very relaxed on the court.
This is the first time the two are pairing. They decided to team up after an initial meeting in the gym at Wimbledon two months ago.
Also at the US Open, another Taiwanese player Hsieh Su-wei and her Chinese partner Peng Shuai failed to reach the quarterfinals. The two-time Grand Slam champions were defeated by Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan and Czech Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova in 2 sets 6-7 and 4-6.
