The International Council for Science (ICSU) General Assembly has chosen Taipei as the host city for its 32nd meeting, scheduled for 2017.

The assembly made the decision after a vote on Wednesday, the final day of its 31st meeting, which was held in Auckland, New Zealand.

During the meeting to select the site of the assembly’s next meeting, Dr. Liu Shaw-chen, a fellow at Taiwan’s top research institute, Academia Sinica, made the case for holding the meeting in Taiwan.

Liu introduced assembly members to Taiwan’s culture and natural beauty, as well as Taiwanese hospitality. Liu also discussed the Taiwanese academic community’s strong ability in the field of research and development as well as Academia Sinica’s conference facilities.

The ICSU is the world’s largest international, non-governmental academic organization. It draws its members from 121 countries and 32 international scientific organizations. The ICSU was founded in 1931, and Academic Sinica has been a member since 1937. The ICSU meets every three years to discuss the direction of international scientific research and development over the following years.
