Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) reiterated Wednesday that cross-strait relations are stable despite “a single incident”, echoing the words of China’s top negotiator with Taiwan.
China’s top negotiator of Taiwan affairs, Zhang Zhijun, made the remark during his recent trip to the United States. The incident Zhang referred to was the recent removal of former MAC deputy minister Chang Hsien-yao who allegedly leaked confidential information to China.
The MAC said that since President Ma Ying-jeou took office, the two sides have signed 21 agreements and that relations across the Taiwan Strait have been at their most stable in 65 years. The MAC said that cross-strait relations have gradually become institutionalized and normalized, and that ties between the two sides will not be affected by “one single incident”.
Zhang said that the peaceful development of cross-strait ties complies with the fundamental interests of the people on both sides. Zhang said “it will not come to a standstill just because of one incident.”
