AIT: US would not interfere in possible Ma-Xi meeting

The US will not interfere in any meeting between President Ma Ying-jeou and Chinese President Xi Jinping. That’s the word from American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) spokesman Mark Zimmer on Friday. The AIT is the de-facto US embassy in Taiwan in the absence of official ties.

Speaking with reporters recently, President Ma said that certain conditions must be met before a meeting with Chinese President Xi can happen. Ma also said that he would not pass up any opportunity to meet with Xi, but if China does not meet Taiwan’s conditions, he won’t try to push for a meeting.

Those conditions include public support in Taiwan for such a meeting and guarantees that the meeting would not compromise Taiwan’s dignity.

Meanwhile, Zimmer also said the US would be happy to see any progress in relations between Taiwan and the US. He also said that Taiwan plays an important role in the US rebalance to the Asia-Pacific.
