Recycled oil scandal affects 933 restaurants, stalls and manufacturers
FDA says 933 companies and restaurants affected

A scandal over recycled cooking oil is continuing to unfold here in Taiwan. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Sunday that the oil in question, from Kaohsiung-based Chang Guann Co., had been used by some 933 restaurants, food stalls and manufacturers.

An investigation discovered that a phony waste processing company had been used as a front for collecting cooking oils meant to be recycled and used for purposes other than human consumption.

Chang Guann allegedly sold some 782 tons of that oil to food companies throughout Taiwan, including brand name enterprises.

The FDA has called on the industry to stop using the oils, and to remove them and affected products from the shelves. The FDA says that operators in possession of the oils and related products should report them to the authorities, who will then collect and dispose of them.

The FDA says it should have a list of all of the affected products on Monday and that consumers will no longer come in contact with them by Tuesday at the latest.
