Interior ministry looking to boost accessibility for elderly people

The interior ministry is pushing for greater accessibility in public space. That’s in response to an aging society.

According to the ministry’s latest statistics, life expectancy in Taiwan has continued to rise. The average life expectancy for Taiwanese men is 75.96 years, while for women it is 82.47 years.

The ministry recently released a building code that requires accessible bathroom facilities, stair-free designs, and the installation of elevators. The goal is to create an environment that is friendly to the elderly as well as to people in wheelchairs or those who use mobility devices.

In addition, the ministry is requiring local governments to remove road blocks at park entrances in order to allow easy access for wheelchair users.
