Heavy holiday traffic on the nation's freeways could continue into Monday evening as the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival weekend draws to a close.
The National Freeway Bureau said that some 2.4 million motorists are expected to use the freeways throughout Monday, most of them likely traveling north towards Taipei between 3pm and 8pm. The bureau said that drivers can use a mobile app called “highway 1968” to help them avoid traffic or find alternative routes.
The bureau said it would only allow vehicles with three or more occupants to enter the northbound lanes of National Freeway Number Five from 3pm to 8pm.
About 2.65 million automobiles used the freeways on Saturday, the first day of the Mid-Autumn Festival weekend. That was about 50 percent higher than the traffic volume on regular days.
