President Ma Ying-jeou has selected new candidates for appointment to the Control Yuan. Ma’s nominations on Wednesday come after the legislature rejected 11 of the original 27 nominees at the end of July.
The Control Yuan is one of the five branches of government in Taiwan. It is also the top government watchdog.
President Ma said that the new nominees have expertise in health and welfare, public construction projects, national defense, foreign policy, and finance. The president believes that the 11 nominees’ academic achievements, professional experience, and work ethic will all stand up to close scrutiny. If the legislature approves the nominations, the president hopes that the nominees will do their best to supervise the government and protect people’s rights.
According to amendments to the Constitution, members of the Control Yuan serve terms of six years and the president is empowered to appoint all 29 members, subject to the approval of the legislature.
