Groups to march in New York in support of UN membership for Taiwan

The Taiwan UN Alliance announced Wednesday that Pro-Taiwan groups will march in New York in support of Taiwanese membership in the UN. The march is scheduled for Saturday, local time.

Though Taiwan participates in certain UN organizations, it is blocked from membership in the UN General Assembly. This is mainly due to opposition from China, a UN Security Council member that regards Taiwan as part of its territory.

Local Taiwanese churches and Overseas Taiwanese associations will participate in the march. The march’s pro-independence organizers hope to present Taiwan as a sovereign, independent country with the right and the responsibility to join the UN.

Following the march, participants will also visit conservative think-tank The Heritage Foundation and meet with US congressmen.

Head of the Taiwan UN Alliance, William Luo, said that getting a place in the UN for Taiwan will be difficult. However, Luo said that Taiwanese people must speak up in support of Taiwan’s right to join the UN.
