Hong Kong Secretary for Food and Health Ko Wing-man said on Friday that a Hong Kong company’s involvement in the recent waste oil scandal has seriously affected Hong Kong’s reputation. Hong Kong firm Globalway had sold oil meant only for animal feed to Taiwan’s Chang Guann Co., the company at the center of Taiwan’s recycled oil scandal. The oil was meant to be recycled.
Ko said there was certainly criminal activity involved in this incident. Officials are treating the investigation into Globalway as a serious criminal investigation.
Some have suggested Hong Kong set up a system to track waste oil and increase penalties for food safety crimes. Ko said these are directions the Hong Kong government is considering.
