On this day in 1847, American forces under General Winfield Scott captured Mexico City, ending the Mexican War.

On this day in 1982, Princess Grace of Monaco died of head injuries suffered in a car crash. She was 52. The American film actress married Prince Rainier in 1956, ending her acting career. She won fame as the cool beauty in films such as "The Country Girl," for which she won an Oscar.

And on this day in 1983, the Philippine Civil Aeronautics Board lifted the ban on China Airlines flights to Manila, and the Civil Aeronautics Administration of the Republic of China lifted the ban on Philippine Airlines flights to Taipei.
