The 2014 Kaohsiung FlexPower 12-hour Ultramarathon drew to a close early on Sunday morning. Kao Chih-ming clinched the men’s title, running a total of 121.6 km in 12 hours.

Kao said that even though it rained ahead of the race, which started at 6pm on Saturday night, it wasn’t enough to bring relief from the heat inside the World Games Stadium, where the race was held. Kao said that the temperature was between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius, and that he considered giving up about six hours into the race.

But Kao stuck with the race, and managed to pull ahead of the frontrunner – Liu Chih-ming – with just three minutes to go. Liu came in second with a total of 121.244 km.

As for the women’s race, Lee Chiu-mei came in first with 108.393 km, beating the second place winner by more than seven kilometers.
