The Central Weather Bureau has upgraded tropical storm Kalmaegi to a moderate typhoon. The announcement came on Sunday morning. Although the typhoon is not headed for Taiwan, meteorologists say that it is likely to bring rain beginning on Sunday evening.
As of Sunday morning, the typhoon was situated about 720 km south south-west of the southern tip of Taiwan, and was traveling west northwest at a speed of 21-28 km per hour.
Forecasters say that the Philippines is likely to bear the brunt of the storm, with storm warnings already issued for parts of Luzon.
Here in Taiwan, meteorologists are predicting scattered showers and thunderstorms, and potentially even torrential rains in the eastern and southern parts of Taiwan, as well as in mountainous areas of the north, and the outlying islands of Matsu.
The Central Weather Bureau is also predicting big surf and strong winds along coastal areas of Taiwan and its outlying islands.
