More than 60% of Taiwanese “under-aged” students have personal Facebook accounts. That’s according to the results of an education ministry survey released Thursday.
Facebook does not allow anyone under the age of 13 to apply for a Facebook account. However, in Taiwan, more than 90% of secondary school students and 65% of primary school students have personal accounts. Some primary school teachers even use Facebook to contact their students regarding class activities.
Deputy education minister Chen Der-hwa said that his ministry will remind Taiwanese schools about regulations on Facebook use to avoid any violations.
The survey has also discovered that more than 90% of students have internet access at home and that the older they are, the longer they use the Internet. High school students spend an average of 10 hours online each week, but that number rises to 25 during summer vacation. They spend most of the time playing online games or logging on to social networks. The study predicts that close to 20% of secondary school students and 10% of elementary school children are at risk of becoming Internet addicts.
