Premier Jiang Yi-huah said that the national police is planning to crack down on gangs and related criminal activity in Taiwan. That’s after a policeman was beaten to death by a violent mob in a shopping area in Taipei’s Xinyi district.
The policeman was assaulted for about 3 minutes by around 50 gang members after trying to intervene in a conflict at a nightclub. An investigation into the case is still ongoing.
At the legislature on Friday, a lawmaker questioned the premier about how the government is ensuring the safety of Taiwan’s streets. Premier Jiang said that security is a basic need of Taiwan’s citizens.
"Regarding this incident, the Taipei City Police Department is planning an intense crackdown on crime," said Jiang. "Of course we’ve also asked the National Police Agency to plan a national inspection and crackdown on gangs and crime."
The premier said that he is not at liberty to disclose the timing of the plan but that it would be carried out swiftly.
