1)

The top story from this past week was that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has started to conduct random checks on the edible oil used by night market vendors. The EPA said on Monday that it will also collect information on how waste oil is collected from vendors and where it ends up.

The EPA says that more than 30,000 tons of waste oil is produced every year. But no one knows exactly where the oil goes once it is collected. The agency says it will set up a tracking and collection system that can pinpoint the whereabouts of the waste oil.

2)

Also this past week, a new budget airline -- V Air – is set to launch its services by the end of the year with an inaugural flight to Bangkok. V Air is Taiwan’s second budget airline, and a subsidiary of TransAsia Airways.

V Air’s CEO, Eleni Lung, said the airline will offer passengers great surprises in terms of ticket prices and services. She also hinted that prices for some tickets might even drop below NT$888 (around US$30). Passengers will be able to enjoy in-flight meals that include a variety of Taiwanese dishes.

3)

And finally this past week Premier Jiang Yi-huah said that the nation’s police are planning to crack down on gangs and related criminal activity in Taiwan. That’s after a policeman was beaten to death by a violent mob in a shopping area in Taipei’s Xinyi district.

The policeman was assaulted for about 3 minutes by around 50 suspected gang members after trying to intervene in a conflict at a nightclub. An investigation into the case is still ongoing.
