Taiwanese weightlifter nabs gold at Asian Games
Record-breaking gold

Female weightlifter Hsu Shu-ching has grabbed the first gold medal for Taiwan in the Asian Games, which are under way in Incheon, South Korea.

Hsu lifted 101 kg in the snatch, and 132 kg in the clean and jerk, on Sunday for a total of 233 kg. Not only did that bring her a gold in the women’s under 53kg category, it also created a new world record.

The silver medal went to Zulfiya Chinshanlo from Kazakhstan, who actually beat Hsu to win the gold for China at the London Olympics in 2012.

Chinese competitor Zhang Wanqiong won the bronze at the Asian Games on Sunday.

Hsu’s gold medal brings Taiwan’s medal count to four so far at the Asian Games. That puts the team, which goes under the name Chinese Taipei, in sixth place overall in the total number of medals.
