Fung-Wong brings heavy rain to southern Taiwan
Kaohsiung deals with floods

Taipei City and much of northern Taiwan have yet to see heavy wind and rain brought by tropical storm Fung-Wong; but forecasters are saying that could change Sunday night.

There are already reports of flooding in some areas of eastern and southern Taiwan, where the storm made landfall on Sunday afternoon. The southernmost county of Pingtung and the southeastern county of Taitung have already accumulated a startling amount of rain in the last 12 hours.

Mountainous areas in Pingtung are reporting totals of up to 900ml of rain, while Chin-feng in Taitung county has accumulated up to 660ml.

Forecasters say that because Taipei City is located in a basin, it is not likely to get rain until later, and that the amount will be less than the surrounding New Taipei City.

Meanwhile, parts of southern and eastern Taiwan also saw strong winds on Sunday. The island of Lanyu, off the coast of Taitung, registered gusts of up to a 17 on the Beaufort Scale – that’s over 200km per hour.
