Tropical Storm Fung-Wong made landfall in southern Taiwan on Sunday morning, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. The storm swept across the southernmost tip of Taiwan, and as of 3pm, it was situated in the waters off the southeastern coast, about 40km northeast of the city of Taitung.
The Central Weather Bureau says that as of broadcast time on Sunday night, the storm was covering most of the southeastern part of the island.
Meteorologists say that the storm was moving north at a speed of up to 25 km per hour. It looked set to make landfall again and travel north toward Taipei.
Officials in the northern cities of Keelung and Taipei have already canceled work and school on Sunday night.
Forecasters say that the eye of the storm is likely to leave Taiwan via the northeastern coast near Keelung by midnight on Sunday at the earliest. The outer perimeter of the storm, they say, is not likely to leave the island until Monday morning.
