Premier Jiang Yi-huah says the government will set up a mechanism to check edible oil within two months. Jiang was speaking Tuesday at the legislature.
Jiang said besides edible oil, other items such as oil for animal feed and lard for industrial use will also be included in the mechanism in the future.
He also promised closer monitoring when questioned by an opposition lawmaker about a government loophole in checking products listed in the sub-category of edible oil.
The premier said the lack of a systemic monitoring system is probably due to lower tariffs on those products.
Edible oil manufacturers will be required to obtain separate licenses for producing edible oil and manufacturing animal feed in the near future. Under current rules, quite a few manufacturers obtain one license only.
