Education minister Wu Se-hua says that he believes that student protestors in Hong Kong are acting within their rights. The students in Hong Kong are boycotting classes in protest of Beijing’s decision to not allow full democratic elections in Hong Kong. Last month, Beijing ruled that it would screen all future chief executive candidates.
At the legislature on Wednesday, Education minister Wu said when he was president of National Chengchi University, he encouraged student participation in public affairs. When Wu was asked about his thoughts on Taiwanese students supporting the Hong Kong protests, Wu said he respects the rights of students to express themselves in an appropriate manner:
"Every student has the right to freedom of expression," said Wu. "Pursuing democracy is a universal value. We hope that everyone can support this."
Wu said that Hong Kong students’ decision to boycott classes is within their rights as a means of expressing their opinion.
