MAC: giving Chinese students health insurance a plus for Taiwan
Minister Wang Yu-chi

The legislature has passed an amendment that would allow Chinese students who study in Taiwan for over six months to have national health insurance. That’s the word from the internal affairs committee at the legislature on Wednesday.

The committee wants to amend clause 21 of the Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area. The amendment would change the status of Chinese students in Taiwan from “temporary stay” to “temporary residence”.

Mainland Affairs Council Minister Wang Yu-chi said giving Chinese students national health insurance will be a financial plus for the nation.

Wang also said amending the status of Chinese students would not give them the right to work or to participate in national exams.
