On this day in 551 BC, Chinese philosopher Confucius was born. ROC President Chiang Kai-shek ordered in 1952 that Teachers’ Day be observed every year on the anniversary of his birth.

On this day in 1066, William I, Duke of Normandy (later known as “William the Conqueror”), led the Norman invasion of England after being promised the English throne by his cousin, Edward the Confessor. He defeated Harold at the Battle of Hastings and as king adopted a feudal constitution.

On this day in 1900, Dr. Sun Yat-sen arrived in Japan-controlled Taiwan, where he set up a secret society and directed an uprising at Huizhou, Guangdong Province.

And on this day in 1978, John Paul I was found dead after only 33 days as pope and was succeeded by John Paul II.
