Taiwan has won the International Earth Science Olympiad team championship for the 8th consecutive year. That’s the word from the education ministry on Monday.
In addition to the four established subjects of astronomy, geology, meteorology and oceanography, this year’s competition also challenged the students in the science of earth systems. More than 80 students from 26 countries competed in this year’s event, held in Spain.
Four high school students from Taiwan won three gold medals and one silver. The gold and silver winners will be awarded NT$200,000 (around US$6,500) and NT$100,000 and be accepted to relevant university departments without having to participate in the college entrance exams.
Over the years, Taiwan has accumulated 24 gold and eight silver medals in the competition.
