Taiwan is donating 7 million NT dollars (US$230,000) to the Vatican’s humanitarian plan to aid Syrian refugees. That’s in light of the attacks by Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria.
The US and its allies began air strikes against IS on September 22 in Syria. As tensions are high in that region, the foreign ministry is warning Taiwanese to be cautious about travel plans there. Citizens traveling to the area should always carry the phone number of Taiwan’s representative office.
In addition to donating money to the Vatican’s humanitarian efforts in the region, Taiwan is working on other plans to aid Syrian refugees.
The IS is an unrecognized state and Sunni militant group active in Iraq and Syria. It aims to bring Muslim-inhabited regions under its political control. The group has been described by the United Nations, the US and many other nations as a terrorist group.
