Chairman of the National Communications Commission (NCC) Howard S.H. Shyh has told the legislature that the NCC will continue its investigation into the Chinese-made Xiaomi smartphone.

The Ministry of Science and Technology recently considered banning civil servants from using Xiaomi phones after it emerged that the phones automatically transmit data to Xiaomi’s servers in Beijing.

Shyh told the legislature Wednesday that it is normal for phones with tech support functions to transmit user data to servers. But Shyh said it appears that Xiaomi phones are transmitting more than just data useful for customer service. He said the NCC is not yet able to answer all questions about Xiaomi phones because the phones’ software has been updated twice.

Shyh said he will cooperate with the head of the Ministry of Science and Technology in evaluating the phones’ risk to information security.
