President Ma Ying-jeou met with El Salvador’s Foreign Minister Hugo Roger Martinez Bonilla on Tuesday in Taipei. The two discussed El Salvador’s goal of developing renewable energy sources.
Bonilla said that El Salvador already derives a large portion of its power from hydroelectricity. However, he said, unstable weather means that the country often finds itself without enough hydro power to meet its needs. Bonilla said that El Salvador would like to develop its capacity to generate renewable power from other sources.
In response, President Ma said that Taiwanese firms are already investing in the development of solar energy in El Salvador.
During the meeting, Ma and Bonilla also signed a letter of intent outlining Taiwan and El Salvador’s shared goals for progress in bilateral relations through the year 2019. The two pledged to strengthen their cooperation in a number of areas, including education, tourism, and disaster prevention.
President Ma said he hopes that ties between Taiwan and El Salvador can continue to strengthen.
