The health ministry has said that the National Health Insurance should cover newborns of all nationality in Taiwan.

The ministry said on Friday that babies born in Taiwan from non-Taiwanese parents currently have to wait six months before they can receive National Health Insurance coverage. But the ministry said that since newborns don’t usually have pre-existing conditions, the waiting period should be scraped. It said that babies of all nationalities should receive coverage the moment they are born in Taiwan. The ministry said that it will amend the regulations when the time is right.

The health ministry also said that experts have proposed 36 changes to the National Health Insurance scheme in an assessment report. The ministry has already made adjustments according to their professional opinion, and will continue to reform the system in the future.
