Ottawa newspapers The Ottawa Citizen and The Embassy both published an exclusive interview with Taiwan’s new representative to Canada in their Wednesday editions.

During the interview, Representative Bruce Linghu discussed important work to be done towards strengthening bilateral ties, including cooperation and exchange in the fields of trade, technology, education, culture, and tourism.

Linghu said it will be important to facilitate visits by Canadian Cabinet ministers to Taiwan. He also said he hopes that Canada will support Taiwan’s goal of meaningful participation in international organizations.

Linghu said he hopes that in the near future, Taiwan and Canada can sign an agreement that will prevent double taxation of Taiwanese nationals in Canada and vice versa. He also said he would like to start negotiations with Canada on a bilateral trade and investment protection agreement.

He asked for Canada’s support for Taiwan’s aim for joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a proposed free trade agreement that would include many countries along the Pacific Rim. He said he believes that Taiwan’s accession to the trade agreement would give Taiwan and Canada greater opportunities for bilateral trade and investment.
