Housing Movement leaders say overnight stay is just the beginning

Leaders of Saturday’s Housing Movement rally say that the overnight stay is just the beginning of their push for affordable housing.

At a press conference following the event on Sunday, leaders urged members of both the ruling and opposition parties to show their support ahead of the presidential elections in 2016.

One of the main organizers, Peng Yang-kai said Sunday that the civic groups will pay visits to political parties to canvass support for the movement. He said that if the parties are sincere in their support, then they should work toward creating substantive reforms ahead of the 2016 elections, rather than just making campaign promises.

The Housing Movement has five major requests. Those include, among other requests: incorporating housing rights into the constitution and an end to forced evictions; making changes to property taxes and an end to property speculation; and increasing public housing to 5% of the total housing in Taiwan.
