Two US Senators have sent a letter of congratulations to President Ma Ying-jeou on the occasion of the upcoming National Day of Taiwan.
The letter, dated Tuesday, was written by Senator Robert Menendez and Senator James Inhofe. In the letter, they said the first democratic republic in Asia, the Republic of China, was founded in 1912. The Republic of China is the official name of Taiwan’s government. The two senators also said that 103 years since the founding of the republic, Taiwan has established a multi-party democracy, and is now playing an important role in the global economy.
Senators Menendez and Inhofe said that Taiwan has been one of the US’ most important Asian partners. They also said that the US and Taiwan share the same values and interests, adding that the fact that many communities in the US are celebrating Taiwan’s National Day is testimony to the strong ties between the two countries.
