President Ma Ying-jeou said on National Day that the government is working on stamping out food safety problems in Taiwan.

Taiwan has been hit with another recycled oil scandal in Tainan just over a month after one broke out in Pingtung. President Ma said that these scandals have affected over 1,000 businesses in Taiwan. The government has tracked down the source of the problems, but Ma said these food safety problems are unacceptable.

"I want to emphasize again that, just as all the people of Taiwan, I cannot accept this kind of evil behavior," said Ma. "I’ve called on all government agencies to reflect on what needs to be done and to investigate and punish any such behavior so that we can prevent food safety problems from happening again."

He said that global media reports about the recent food safety scandals have affected Taiwan’s image.

The recent oil scandal was revealed by a Pingtung farmer and a Taichung policeman. Ma said their bravery and sense of responsibility is one of the most beautiful aspects of Taiwan.

The good nature of Taiwan’s people and the nation’s constitution all display the nation’s respect for human rights. Ma also said the kindness and support that poured out for recent disaster victims are also one of Taiwan’s most precious assets.
