Economic outlook optimistic, public safety good: Cabinet

Taiwan’s Cabinet says that the nation’s economy is growing steadily. The comment came on Sunday in response to a critical ad from an “angry citizen” which was run on the front pages of several local newspapers.

The ad had referred to “economic ruins.” But Cabinet Spokesman Sun Lih-chyun said that official statistics released in August showed confidence in the market. The economic indicator was flashing a green light in August, for a seventh month in a row, signifying stable growth.

Meanwhile, Sun said that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had just last week upgraded its prediction for Taiwan’s economic growth rate this year. The IMF raised its prediction by nearly half a percent to 3.5%, which is ahead of its prediction for the global economic growth rate of 3.3%.

As to criticisms about public safety, the Cabinet spokesman spoke about a web site called Lifestyle 9, which said that FBI statistics showed that Taiwan was the second safest country in the world.
