Taiwan’s Cabinet responded on Sunday to a negative ad which featured prominently in the local press over the weekend. The ad was framed as a letter from “an angry citizen”; it criticized the government for its handling of food safety, economic development, public safety, worker’s rights, and other issues.
Cabinet Spokesman Sun Lih-chyun responded to the ad on Sunday, saying that the government was fully committed to dealing with the problems at hand. He said the government had already proposed eight measures for strengthening food safety. Those include, among other things: increasing fines, a centralized reporting system, and systems for managing oil recycling and tracing oil products.
Sun said that the government has been working non-stop to trace the illegal oils, dealing with the problems as they come to light, no matter how large the companies in question, or how deep their market penetration.
Sun said that while the process is painful in the short term, Taiwan’s government is committed to giving the nation a fresh start, in order to reinstate confidence in the food industry.
