The premier apologized on Tuesday for the public anxiety caused by food scandals. He was speaking on Tuesday at the legislature.

Kuomintang lawmaker Wen Chong-jun said the premier should apologize to the nation for the unrest caused by food safety problems. Premier Jiang Yi-huah said the government needed not only to apologize but also to change the situation.

"In the past few decades, the central and local governments have not governed food safety well. This has led to anxiety in society," said Jiang.

"I am willing to apologize for this at any time. But the role of the government is not just to give constant apologies. It needs to take action and close up the loopholes one by one."

After the major food company, Ting Hsing International Group, was hit with another major food scandal, people have been speculating if Uni-President Enterprises will come out with a scandal as well. The premier said he can’t predict how many scandals there will be but all companies will be held to the same standard. Any company suspected of illegal activity will be investigated.

Premier Jiang said that ensuring food safety is one of the government’s most important jobs. It will continue to work hard until these problems are resolved.
