Commander-in-Chief of Taiwan’s Navy, Chen Yeong-kang, has praised improved cross-strait relations as a model for the Asia-Pacific region to follow.
Chen was speaking Wednesday at an academic conference on maritime transport. Chen said that from a geostrategic viewpoint, the security of the seas surrounding Taiwan is not just a matter of Taiwan’s sustainable development and prosperity. The security of Taiwan’s waters is also a cornerstone of security in the Asia-Pacific region.
Improvements in cross-strait relations have led to an easing of tensions in the Taiwan Strait and brought peace and prosperity both to Taiwan and Mainland China. He also said both sides have increased cooperation in a number of areas and built up mutual trust.
He said the easing of tensions between Taiwan and Mainland China offers a new model for dealing with conflicts in the Asia-Pacific region.
