The Cabinet’s Food Safety Office formally began operations on Wednesday. The government has set up the office with the aim of raising the level of food safety inspections in the wake of a major food safety scare.
The Food Safety Office’s staff is drawn from a variety of ministries, including the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Justice, and the Council of Agriculture.
Newly appointed Health Minister Chiang Been-huang said Wednesday that local health authorities will continue to conduct food safety inspections while the Food Safety Office will work to integrate, coordinate, and direct their efforts.
