A minor planet has been officially named "Taipei". That’s the word from National Central University (NCU) on Friday.

The minor planet was discovered in 2006 by the head of NCU’s Lulin Observatory, Lin Hung-Chin and Chinese amateur astronomer Ye Quanzhi. The naming was finalized by the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center on September 9.

The NCU said that planet "Taipei" was in an area between Capricorn, Sagittarius and Microscopium when it was discovered in 2006, and is now within Leo

NCU's Graduate Institute of Astronomy has discovered over 800 asteroids. "Taipei" is the 27th that has been named and is also the 10th named after a Taiwanese county or city. The university said the name "Taipei" was chosen in recognition of the capital city's long-term efforts to promote astronomy education.
