Film lovers in Washington DC and its neighboring areas will be able to watch a collection of films by prominent Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien.

According to a statement released on Saturday by Taiwan’s representative office in the United States, an international touring retrospective entitled, “Also Like Life: The films of Hou Hsiao-hsien”, will screen 17 films of Hou starting from the 1980s at the Freer Gallery of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the AFI Silver Theatre over the course of November and December.

Among the films to be screened are some of Hou’s most acclaimed feature films, including “Dust in the Wind” (1986), “A City of Sadness” (1989), “the Puppetmaster” (1993), and “Three Times” (2005).

Hou is a prominent figure in Taiwan’s “New Wave” cinema movement, which began in the 1980s. The movement is characterized by realistic and sympathetic portrayals of Taiwanese life, in stark contrast to the kung-fu action films and melodramas of earlier decades.

Hou is known for his long takes, minimal camera movements, and observant and realistic style of filmmaking.
