Groups for the elderly are calling on candidates in the local elections to promote policies for the elderly. The group says policies for the elderly have been neglected during the election campaign.
The Federation for the Welfare of the Elderly recently held a national forum with over 250 groups for the elderly that came up with 56 policy suggestions. The top five include increasing flu immunizations and health check-ups, establishing elderly day care centers and hubs, increasing special buses catered to the physically challenged and increasing facilities for the elderly.
The head of the federation Wu Yu-qing explains," There are two major systems, if we can have daily care centers and hubs, then more disabled elderly can be cared for in their communities."
Most elderly day care centers are in Taipei or Taichung. Hualien in eastern Taiwan does not have any. The federation sent its policy suggestions to election candidates.
Taiwan’s biggest local elections are to take place on November 29.
