The Ministries of the Interior and Science and Technology have unveiled the Dongsha Atoll Research Center.
Interior minister Chen Wei-zen and technology minister Simon Chang attended the inauguration ceremony on Thursday. The newly unveiled center is located in the Dongsha Atoll National Park in the South China Sea. The national park, established in 2007, is the country’s first marine national park and focuses on the protection of coral reefs and the ecosystem.
Interior minister Chen Wei-zen said Taiwan is an island country, and both the government and the people have the responsibility and obligation to protect the ocean. Chen also said he hopes the new research center will become an important hub for conservation work in the South China Sea.
