Education minister wants gov’t to build platform for dialogue with students
Education minister Chiang Wei-ling

The education minister is saying he hopes the government can set up a platform for dialogue with student protestors. Students have occupied the legislature since March 18 over opposition to a cross-strait trade in services agreement.

Education Minister Chiang Wei-ling spoke on Friday about the crisis. "I’m sure that everyone is concerned about this," Chiang said. "We hope to exchange thoughts with the president on this and perhaps set up a platform that will be a basis for future dialogue."

The education minister and president of Academia Sinica will meet with President Ma Ying-jeou at the presidential office to talk about the issue on Friday night.

Chiang said that university deans are very concerned about the recent student movement. They are also worried about the effect this will have on the image of Taiwan’s democracy and plan to present their thoughts to the president.
