A Taiwanese animal rights group has been named a co-winner of the 2014 Lush Prize in London.

The Taiwan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was recognized Friday for raising public awareness about the use of animal testing in the manufacturing of cosmetics. It shared the award and prize money with Humane Research Australia, a non-profit organization that challenges the use of animals in research.

The two winners in the public awareness category were chosen from a shortlist of 11 groups from countries such as the United States, New Zealand, and Sweden.

The Lush Prize, with prize money totaling ₤250,000, recognizes contributions or excellence in five categories that also include lobbying, training, and research.

Taiwan’s deputy representative to the United Kingdom, Hsu Fen-chuan, said a Taiwanese group winning the public awareness prize is an indication that public education on the subject of animal protection has been making progress in the country.
