The number of tourists traveling between Taiwan and Japan is likely to hit the four million mark this year. That’s the word from Taiwan’s representative to Japan, Shen Ssu-tsun.
Shen is the head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan. That’s the de facto embassy in the absence of official diplomatic ties between Taiwan and Japan.
In a written report to Taiwan’s legislature on Monday, Shen said Taiwanese travelers made 2.34 million visits to Japan last year. He said that’s mostly due to the depreciation of the Japanese yen over the past two years and an aviation agreement between the two sides.
Shen said that since the number of visits had already reached 3.43 million between January and September of this year, there should be no problem in reaching the target of four million this year.
In his report, Shen also said that the government will set up a Taipei Culture Center in Tokyo next January to promote cultural exchanges.
